Nodar Kumaritashvili qualified for the luge men's singles event at the 2010 Winter Olympics, which
was set to be his Olympic debut. On February 12, 2010, Nodar was fatally injured in an accident
during a training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre when, coming out of turn 15 too late he was
unable to compensate for turn 16 and lost control of his luge and was thrown off and over the
protective wall on the side of the track, striking a steel support beam at the end of the run.
Medics were at his side within seconds of the crash and began CPR within one minute. He was
airlifted to a Whistler hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead
In response to the accident, the Georgian team announced that it would consider skipping the opening
ceremonies or withdraw from the games entirely. However, Nikolos Rurua, the Georgian minister for
sports and culture, later announced the team would stay in Vancouver and "dedicate their efforts to
their fallen comrade."The other seven members of the Georgian Olympic team wore black armbands
during the opening ceremony, tied a black ribbon to the Georgian flag, and left a space vacant in
the procession as a mark of respect, immediately leaving BC Place Stadium after the procession. They
were greeted with a standing ovation from the assembled crowd. A one-minute moment of silence was
held during the opening ceremonies to honour his memory, when both the Canadian and Olympic flags
were lowered to half mast.
I did not know Nodar, but I was so upset reading the news story of his accident and watching the
video of his fatal crash, I thought I would make a memorial on here for everyone to light a candle
and remember him.

Dear Nodar,

I felt really sad when I've read articles about what happened to you. I've also seen the video and photos of you during your second training run wishing I was Superman ready to catch you. Wish I was your friend,if not one of your close friends.

Don't worry so much about us here. I'm sure God will help us and heal our mourning hearts. I'm praying for your family, relatives and other people who love you.

Rest well Nodar, for we know that you are happy being with God right now and embracing the new journey of your life..See you in God's time my friend.

You're still here with us

Dear Nodar,
I wish I knew you in reality but now, after looking at your pictures with your friends, I feel as if I did. I envy those who were around you here on earth for they were extremely lucky. I was immensly touched by your story and am so proud of you representing the elite athletes of your country. You are the best, just like the saying in English "Best of flowers are first to be picked". I miss you but am comforted by knowing that you are omnipresent in spirit with us. I will never forget you and look forward to the day when we meet in heaven. Everlasting love, your fan Albert.
